Guidance for Blog

Guidance

Extracts from the Media Studies syllabus. Read very carefully.

The Production Portfolio offers candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in research, planning, production and evaluation and their understanding of the following media key concepts:
• audience
• institutions
• media language
• genre.

The purpose of this unit is to assess:
• candidates’ skills of research, planning and presentation and planning through the construction of their own practical production (AO3)
• candidates' ability to construct and evaluate their own products using creative and technical skills (AO4).

An extract from a magazine-style radio programme with a specified audience. The extract should demonstrate a mixture of sound elements, such as title music, presenter, OBs, vox pops, recorded interviews and appropriate sound effects. A sound script should be included. Maximum length: four minutes.

• Audio material must be original, produced by the candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects. If candidates are working in a group, each group member is expected to take on a specific role such as director, sound engineer, editor, presenter, reporter.

Evidence of research, planning and each candidate’s contribution to the production must be presented in an individual Production Log. The Production Portfolio The Production Portfolio will consist of the following:
• the Production Log
• the Production itself
• the Evaluation
• the Appendix – to include a range of additional material appropriate to the product, such as: shots of websites used to collect audio samples, extra (interesting) audio not used in final magazine show, emails relevant to research.

The Production Log.

The production log will provide important evidence to the teacher and moderator of the individual candidate’s role and personal contribution to the production. It must be completed individually and is expected to include the following:
• evidence of research to include recordings from a minimum of THREE magazine style radio shows with analysis of their codes & conventions and timings of content. Use of Freesound.org and Free Music Archive to collect audio samples for use of the group productions.
• evidence of planning, such as the structure of the radio show, script, photographs of OB, timings for each of the elements of the show: eg, collection and editing of the vox pops, preparation for interviews, the interview(s) itself, post-production of interview material.
• key dates, decisions and deadlines
• a record of the individual candidate’s exact contributions to the production, such as microphone work (portable and ‘studio-based’), photography, interviews, writing, audience research, redrafting of script, audio editing and screen shots of multi-track construction.

Evaluation

The individual evaluation is to be produced by the candidates under supervised conditions. The presentation of the evaluation may take the form of any one, or combination, of the following:

• a written commentary
• a slide presentation (PowerPoint, Keynote, Impress)
• a podcast – video and/or audio • a DVD with extras.
Those candidates offering a written commentary should aim to write between 500–800 words. A slide, presentation (which centres may wish to video), should include 10–15 slides. A podcast/DVD with extras should be about 3–5 minutes in length.

EVALUATION CHECK

11.       Explain the strengths and/or weaknesses of FOUR of the decisions you made in the construction of your show. The decisions you discuss should be (INSTITUTIONAL): how we allocated roles in the production team; (REPRESENTATIONAL) how we decided to present an issue or a character in the show; (GENERIC) how I/we communicated the GENRE of the show through using its CODES and CONVENTIONS; (MEDIA LANGUAGE) how we used the LANGUAGE of radio to good effect. The Language of Radio is how you arranged the INDEXICAL SIGNIFIERS to make a meaningful communication. Discuss an example of multi-tracking to explain this.

2.       Explain the strengths and weaknesses of the research you undertook into OTHER MAGAZINE STYLE RADIO PROGRAMMES. –research methods (listening, reading, websites). Did you do enough research to really understand this GENRE of Magazine Style Radio? Did you just do some SEARCHES or did you really complete a cross checking research approach?

3.       Explain the strengths and/or weaknesses into the research you completed into the TARGET AUDIENCE for your MAGAZINE STYLE RADIO. How do professional organisations like the BBC and the Radio Centre (commercial radio)research into their radio audiences? (semi-structured interviewing…open & closed Qs. Interviewing  in places to suit interviewees, street, cafĂ©, park)
4.       Identify THREE or FOUR examples of the CODES and CONVENTIONS you used in the construction of your MAGAZINE STYLE RADIO PROGRAMME .  Explain how these examples help to create the GENRE of YOUR MAGAZINE STYLE RADIO SHOW.

5.       Identify and explain some strengths and weaknesses in the planning of your Radio Show.       Did you and your group work to scheduled deadlines?  Were some tasks harder to produce than you thought they would be? What were the main challenges of team work? How did you deal with group disagreements?

6.       Explain how you organised and used AUDIENCE FEEDBACK to discover the strengths and weaknesses of your FINISHED show. You really do have to play your show to real people and collect their responses. You must also collate and summarise your findings.

7.       How successfully have you met the details of the BRIEF?  Refer to the constituent elements in your show explaining how you managed to put together: two interviews-jingle-vox pops-OB-presenter role …so that the whole lot sounded convincing to your TARGET AUDIENCE.

8.       How have you shown evidence that you UNDERSTAND the concept of INSTITUTION?
I can think of two ways. One is through using the RADIO INDUSTRY’s website (RADIO CENTRE)to show what you have learned about AUDIENCES for radio and speech radio in particular. The second way is through understanding how your creative team worked together as a group. In a way your small group was an INSTITUTION producing a media text (ie. YOUR MAGAZINE STYLE AUDIO SHOW).

Production Log

Genre Research

Before I can make my own Magazine Style Radio Show, I must research a Magazine Style Radio Show.

For Example:

This is a magazine style radio show...

In this radio show they bring up the following topics...
  • Refugee Women.
  • A new novel.
  • A film called 'Riot Club' being released.
  • A remembrance service for parents who lost their child at birth.

In this radio show they talk about the subjects of...
    • Intro
    • Verdict on Holloway
    • Woman in Science/Technology
    • Waris Dealey
    • Get Rid Of The Get Well Soon Card?

And My final example of a magazine style radio programme is...

In this radio show they talk about...
  • Wonga's Money Crisis
  • James Bond Book
  • Squad for Euro 2016
I know that these are examples of magazine style radio shows because they bring up multiple topics in their programme.

Senders                                                            Receivers

Apple Macs                                                      25-40 year olds
EA Sports                                                         12-17 year old sporty people
Pioneer                                                             15-25 year olds DJ's/Producers
Kickers                                                             11-16 year old students

Twitter                                                              25-35 year olds
Instagram                                                          13-18 year olds
YouTube                                                           12-25 year olds

MICROPHONES

To record our interviews and our radio programme we used two different kinds of microphones; one of them was a portable microphone which allowed us to go out and interview people outside of school which allowed us to explore the thoughts of people that weren't just our age, which was the benefit of having and using a portable microphone. The other microphone we used was a USB microphone which was a much more professional piece of recording kit and meant we had to stay in the classroom to record our programme, it plugs into the USB port in the computer and is therefore unable to be moved outside of the school unless using a laptop.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In our group all three of us had different responsibilities. Faisal was undeniably the brains of the group as he guided me and Jay on where we were both going wrong on our blogs and also on Audacity as Jay and I weren't very good at using it, but we got used to it in the end. Faisal also wrote the script, however I did most of the wording involved in the script. Jay and I shared researching the topics to speak about in the programme, in fact we thought of all of the topics. I was doing lots and lots of research into each topic, for example going on Google and looking up Sensations Popcorn, then going on news. I was responsible for pretty much all of the secondary research and Jay was responsible for almost all of the primary research as I wasn't present when they interviewed people with the portable microphone.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

When we make our Magazine Style Radio Show, we must know who our target audience is going to be and when and where they listen to the radio. We got some key information to help us find out about our potential listeners with these 3 websites...

RAJAR
OFCOM

RADIO CENTER

A topic that my group could focus on in our Magazine Style Radio Show is what different types of comedies that our audience like to watch, for example inappropriate comedies like The Inbetweeners. I came up with this topic because I have been watching lots of comedies on my Netflix account such as The Inbetweeners, Step Brothers and Kevin Hart, and decided it would be quite a good topic for our magazine style radio show.

The Netflix home screen.
the characters from 'The Inbetweeners'.

Kevin Hart's stand up comedy film 'Laugh at my Pain'

Research Methods
  • Questionnaire
  • Public Survey
  • Internet
  • Our Own Knowledge
  • Previous Research

1 Primary Research Method to Research Audience Thoughts/Ideas Of Films:
  • Interview
Audience Research

To decide what topics would come up in our radio show, I had chose to ask our target audience some questions that were involved with movies as that is what our show will be about.

Useful Tools

This tool allows you to make your recording lowder and you can choose how much louder you want the recording by raising the Amplification to make it louder or lower the Amplification which would make the recording lower. This affect can be very useful when you want to have a voice recording over a jingle or song because you can make the voice recording louder than the jingle or music but still be able to hear the background music/jingle.
When you have multiple tracks on one audacity file then it can often be quite a hassle to listen to just one of the tracks without going through and muting all the other tracks which is why the 'Solo' tool is useful as when you select solo on one of the tracks it mutes the other tracks so that you can listen to the one track you selected.
This tool allows you to move the seperate recordings to wherever you'd like which can be very useful as it allows you to make your recordings flow from one into another instead of there being a big gap between each recording.

The Chosen Topics

The topic that our group decided to talk about in general is film which is why we've called our radio show 'Movieholics FM', this is because of the wide variety of sub-topics that we could discuss in the show and of course due to our general interest in movies and films. The topics that we discuss in our magazine style radio show are the 4D cinema that has recently been opened in Milton Keynes, the second topic that's brought up is the new Sensations popcorns which would interest film fanatics as popcorn is the most typical food that an audience would eat whilst enjoying a film and the final topic that we talk about is the new Netflix update which interests movie lovers because Netflix is full of films and TV programmes that aren't shown anywhere else and they've added even more movies and TV programmes to the constantly increasing list of options, we also talk about how Netflix are winning the battle with cable television providers as Netflix succeed in showing a much wider variety of movies and films from the UK and other parts of Europe.

My Digital Life

I go onto the internet everyday on either my phone, which I use apps like...

WhatsApp

I use WhatsApp everyday and pretty much every time I go on my phone I need to check WhatsApp.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)

I also check BBM a lot, but not as much as WhatsApp, because I talk to people more on WhatsApp than BBM.

Facebook

I check Facebook nowhere near as much as I used to, it was a kind of obsession for a while and I think it's very easy to get addicted to, in fact I think all apps are... Especially apps that are socializing apps.

Instagram

Instagram is definitely my all time favourite app at the moment, not too sure why to be honest, again VERY addictive aha.

I also use my laptop to go on various websites that are not the same to use on your phone, for example...

Soundcloud

Which I don't often use, but I use it to hear new releases for some underground artists like Woz, Zed Bias or Paleman and also to hear mixes from radio shows like Rinse FM. I prefer to use my laptop to use Soundcloud because my laptop has better sound quality.

Mrtzcmp3

Mrtzcmp3 is a website for downloading music that I use pretty much everyday because it provides pretty much all the music I'm looking for at a great quality, an even better quality than other websites or even iTunes which provides 128 kbps, however I need music quality to be 320 kbps.
